Gibraltar in Spain

It is rather cheeky to include 'The Rock' on a list of Spanish attractions as the ownership of the island has long been disputed. It was captured by the British in 1704 and became a British colony in 1830 and has remained in British control ever since. While Spain is keen to retain control, the vast majority of Gibraltar's population regularly vote to remain as part of the Britain. The island is home to Barbary Macaques, Europe's only 'wild' monkeys who sleep in caves (apparently legend has it that the island will only be given up by the British when these tailless moneys leave).

Gibraltar may be accessed by passing through the border crossing in Spain's La Lina. The most spectacular aspect of Gibraltar is its towering mountain. It is possible to climb it for spectacular view, others opt for the cable car. A hint is to take the cable car to the top of the rock and then stroll downwards, exploring as you go.

It is also possible to hop into a regular car for a guided tour of the island (there are plenty of individuals touting for business). Once there are four aboard, off they go.

One of the appeals for visitors is the fact that Africa is but a few hours boat ride away. Regular excursions take in exotic locations such as Tangiers or Marinasmir.
